I am not convinced that local media itself isn't part of the blackout. CNN is just about as toxic of a spill as the leak is. Considering that the entire area is volatile and the Fed won't let anyone with 65 feet of an oil-affected item/object/boat/animal seems that we should be seeing a flood of information on this thing.

Stands to reason that the millions of gallons of oil we now have to contend with far outweigh the small satisfaction we can have in seeing them start to resolve the spill itself. Like I said before, I lived in Alaska and I am going back up there on Thursday for 4 months to work. I have been to Valdez many times and have seen the efforts and the damage over the years. Think about the scale here. The entire Prince William Sound area was damaged by one ship skirting onto one outcrop of rock in the center of the bay (Pretty darn easy to miss, even at night, unless your drunk, as the captain was).

This ship unleashed an official 11 million gallons into the Sound yet the local experts and the people who actually had to get their hands into the stuff, state that it was more likely around 28 million gallons roughly. That was one ship.

Let's say Exxon was right and it was around 11 million, I will say 15 to be somewhat 'fair'
At the current status of the Gulf we are at .... according to one report

"As of Tuesday, the 84th day of the disaster, between 90.4 and 178.6 million gallons of oil have spewed into the Gulf of Mexico "

Even with an average of say 140, that is still about 9.3 Exxon Valdez disasters in the time this spill has gone on. Now that's just what we can estimate from what we see. BP has done such a beautiful job of covering up as much of the story and the oil as they can that we really have no real idea of the entire scope of this tragedy.

The Exxon Valdez spill happened in 1989 and I turned 21 in 1994, when I arrived in Alaska for the second time. Even 5 years after the event, when I went to Valdez, they were still arguing about 3 main things...

1. Restitution for loss of life to the wildlife population including, land, sea, and air based animals.
2. Restitution for loss of livelihood to members of key fisheries and production.
3. The full extent of the damage according to depth of oil still lingering in the sand and beachs, and recovery from loss of tourism and charters.

Sound familiar? Now think of this on 10X the scale...

This is not what was necessarily being argued about by the courts and systems but the locals themselves and the people that had to go back to the interior to find work. Even to this day there can be found small remnants of this disaster.

Now the really sad part.

Out of all these 9.3 Exxon Valdez disasters that have been spilling into our Gulf, we have yet to see even 3% of the oil from it reach physical land, or become absorbed into the soil and water system.

Let's brace ourselves for the long hall and pray and hope that some good, some positive news, will break this injustice of our greed vs. the planet. (myself included)

(end rant)
