but take a look at this chart....

According to your graph there definately seems to be a 50 year cycle of activity. And it looks like it was worse at the beginning of the last century...
Nice find Teloc.

We have to consider that technology is improving
for detection and population increasing.
The graph itself looks concerning but remember
we have NO data with the graphs to see what
the other variables are doing so we can't assume much. My2pennies.

What the chart shows, is that major geological events don't occur very often. Since the movement of tectonic plates is not measured in feet/year, it is a slow process. More like mm/yr or maybe even cm/yr. This would cause a slow build up of tensions between plates globaly. Sorta like suspending a weight from many elastic bands. Once one breaks, the tension is greater on the others, so they all start breaking. Till the weight drops.

With the Earth though, when one major earthquake happens. With all the tectonic tensions, it's like the first elastic breaking, the vibrations (which are global) trigger another, then another etc. until the plates settle in new positions.
It would be nice to see records going back 500-1000 years, but I'm sure athough there may be a few recorded events, nothing like we can do today globaly.

But, back to point. Is it possible that what we are seeing is the begining of an historical record of earthquake cycles? Meaning, the earth suffers many major earthquakes every x number of centuries?

Its amazing just the other day i saw a guy on the news talking about the earthquakes rencently and saying that the data shows there is no threat here . But any intelligent person can get online and look at the data and see with untrained eye's that the recent spike in activity is a bit alarming . But thanks to DTV i kinda saw this coming , Ive been checking this site for a few years and yes you have to weed through some info . But in the end its always a great place to get some news .

Great job and keep it coming

This kinda confirms Telocs chart and badgers comments.

When you look at these stats and realize that we are only 1/5 of the way through this year... wow.

I would be interested to find out statistically when do earthquakes occur within the year itself.
