Planes expected to reroute following massive solar eruption

January 23, 2012 - A powerful M9-class solar storm that unleashed a coronal mass ejection towards Earth in the early hours of Jan. 23, 2012 (GMT).

Radiation from an immense photo voltaic blast hit the Earth Tuesday -- forcing Delta Air Lines to redirect at minimum 50 % a dozen airplanes that had been routed over the North Pole.

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center -- the nation’s official source of warnings about area weather conditions and its impact on Earth -- issued a geomagnetic storm warning Monday soon after a satellite witnessed an ultraviolet flash from the huge solar eruption.

There is no risk to people on Earth, Doug Biesecker of the NOAA Area Climatic conditions Prediction Heart instructed

But as a unusual precaution, some roman policier flights have been re-routed to avoid conversation lapses and exposing pilots and passengers to excessive radiation.

"We know that some airways did not fly the polar routes yesterday," Biesecker told Delta is a single of them, rerouting flights amongst Hong Kong and the U.S. that typically fly about the pole.

“We are adjusting the flight routine of a number of of our flights,” Anthony Black, a spokesman for Delta, advised "We're flying additional south than we would normally fly."

The adjustments -- mainly meant to prevent loss of radio conversation -- affect roughly 6 flights today, he mentioned the airline will re-consider tomorrow to determine whether or not additional changes will be required.

Ed Martelle, a spokesman for American Airlines, stated it was not affected by the photo voltaic flares, however American ongoing to check the predicament. United did not reply to emails, nor did the FAA reply to requests for much more info.

Kathy Sullivan, deputy administrator of NOAA, first proposed that rerouting may well be required Monday early morning at a Meteorological Culture assembly in New Orleans, La., in accordance to

MASSIVE SOLAR STORM: Delta Reroutes Flights amid Biggest Storm Since 2005

The Earth is literally taking a pounding. A massive blast of plasma energy spewed from the sun on Sunday night and led to the strongest radiation storm since 2005. Delta Air Lines has been forced to redirect certain high-flying airplanes as a precaution. NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center issued a geomagnetic storm watch after a satellite...
