Very strong magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Sea of Okhotsk

August 14, 2012 - A very strong earthquake with recorded magnitude of 7.7 struck Sea of Okhotsk on August 14, 2012 at 2:59 UTC according to USGS. The earthquake had massive depth of 625.9 km (388.9 miles) so no tsunami is expected. Epicenter is located 158 km (98 miles) ENE of Poronaysk, Russia at coordinates 49.784°N, 145.126°E. Preliminary data showed magnitude 7.3 but USGS upgraded it to 7.7. EMSC still has initial magnitude of 7.3.
