Judge rules police wrong to join pride march

SUMMARY

A court ruled that Northumbria Police acted partially by allowing officers to march in a Gay Pride event. Linzi Smith, a gender-critical lesbian, argued that uniformed officers participating in such a politically charged event violated their duty of impartiality.

Responding to the ruling, Ms Smith said:

“I am delighted with the judgment of the court. It is terrifying to live in a community where the police have abandoned their duty of impartiality and embraced a highly controversial political cause.”

She expressed her satisfaction with the ruling, stating, “I am delighted with the judgment of the court.” The judge noted that officers' participation could create a perception of bias, especially if conflicts arose between differing beliefs on gender ideology.

The ruling may impact police involvement in future Pride events. Other police forces are reviewing the decision to ensure their own impartiality. Northumbria Police emphasized their commitment to serving all communities fairly while engaging at events.
