Trump administration fires 8 immigration judges in New York City

The Trump administration fired eight immigration judges in New York City, following a lawsuit from a dismissed judge claiming discrimination. Tania Nemer alleged her firing was based on her gender and other factors, despite having excellent performance reviews.

Her complaint states, "The lightning-fast, precipitous timing indicates that the incoming Administration's decision was made... to target disfavored civil servants." Nemer is among over 100 judges dismissed amid ongoing staffing changes at the Department of Homeland Security, which is hiring new "deportation judges."

Immigrant advocates criticize the firings, noting a backlog of 3.7 million immigration cases.
