The Russian war in Ukraine has consequences in the Premier League: the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich is no longer the owner of Chelsea FC.
Roman Abramovich is no longer in charge at Chelsea. ” I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart,” said the billionaire in a statement released by the club. The Russian continues: “I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.”
Abramovich took over the Blues in 2003 for around 170 million. Today the value of the club is estimated at around two million Swiss francs. The Russian is one of numerous oligarchs and companies facing sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It has already been proposed in the UK Parliament to freeze his accounts and confiscate properties including Chelsea.
