This cool miniature steam engine

This is called an Aeolipile, and it was invented around the year 100 CE by Hero of Alexandria which means the Romans had steam engines about 1700 years before the industrial revolution. It’s unknown if it was ever used practically (but probably not) or if it was just seen as a novelty. A similar device is described 200 years prior, but it’s unknown if it is the same device or merely a predecessor.
