UK to purchase new jets capable of carrying nuclear bombs
Britain will purchase 12 F-35A fighter jets, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, marking the first time since the Cold War that British jets can deploy such arms. This was announced at a NATO summit in the Hague.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasized the need for enhanced national security amid growing threats, stating, “In an era of radical uncertainty, we can no longer take peace for granted.”
New jets will be stationed at RAF Marham and are intended to join NATO’s nuclear mission. The UK previously retired its nuclear-capable Tornado jets in 1998.
The plan highlights a shift in military strategy to address emerging threats from nuclear weapons. Critics argue the UK defense spending is lagging behind other NATO countries, as Germany aims to meet a 5% spending target ahead of the UK.
