Machado's close ally was kidnapped hours after prison release
SUMMARY
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado announced that her close ally, Juan Pablo Guanipa, was kidnapped shortly after being released from prison. Armed men in civilian clothing took him away in Caracas around midnight. Machado demanded his immediate release, stating, “Heavily armed men...violently took him away.”
This kidnapping followed the government's recent release of several opposition members amid pressure for political detainees' freedom, supported by U.N. representatives. Guanipa's family reported he was intercepted by a group of about ten unidentified individuals. Concerns for his safety are rising as the country debates a new amnesty bill.
