AOL will stop offering dial-up internet service after more than 30 years in business

SUMMARY

AOL is ending its dial-up internet service after more than 30 years. The company announced the discontinuation effective September 30. Despite the rise of broadband and wireless internet, around 160,000 users still connect via landline, according to the 2023 US Census.

AOL, once a major force in popularizing the internet, became famous for its "You've Got Mail" notifications and promotional CDs. However, the brand has lost much of its influence. AOL was previously involved in a notorious merger with Time Warner and is now operated by a private equity firm that also owns Yahoo.
