UK to build fleet of spy balloons
Britain is developing a fleet of spy balloons to enhance its intelligence capabilities amid growing concerns over China’s surveillance. These high-altitude, uncrewed vehicles can operate at altitudes of up to 80,000 feet and cover over 2,000 nautical miles, providing surveillance and communications.
Defense Minister Maria Eagle emphasized the importance of this innovation, stating,
“This innovation is about giving our Armed Forces the edge.”
Developed under Project Aether, the balloons could also assist in disaster support and weather forecasting. This initiative follows increased scrutiny of Chinese spy balloons after the US downed one in 2023, raising concerns about Beijing's surveillance efforts.
Britain's military aims to strengthen its capabilities through advanced technologies in response to rising global tensions.
