Moldova votes yes to joining EU by tiny margin

SUMMARY

Moldova voted narrowly in favor of EU membership with 50.3% supporting the constitutional change, while 49.7% opposed it.

The referendum faced accusations of Russian interference, particularly as results showed a strong "no" campaign initially. An emergency press conference was held by President Maia Sandu, who blamed foreign influence on the early results.

Support from Moldovans abroad helped turn the tide in favor of EU entry. Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan stated the outcome was a “victory for the people of the Republic of Moldova and a defeat for Russia.” Efforts are underway to amend the constitution and move towards EU accession by 2030.
