Orbán's 16-year rule over Hungary ends in crushing election defeat

SUMMARY

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s 16-year tenure ended with a significant election defeat. His opponent, Péter Magyar, is projected to win 138 out of 199 parliamentary seats, leaving Orbán’s Fidesz party with only 54. Orbán conceded, stating, “However it turned out, we will serve our country and the Hungarian nation from the opposition.”

Magyar's likely supermajority will enable him to dismantle Orbán's authoritarian structures and restore democratic practices. This shift promises to realign Hungary with EU values, much to the relief of European leaders. The election outcome marks a setback for U.S. interests as well, particularly Trump's nationalist agenda.
