Japan sends in troops to help tackle deadly bear attacks
SUMMARY
Authorities in Akita, Japan, have seen a sixfold increase in bear sightings, prompting the call for assistance from the Self Defence Force to tackle deadly bear attacks. Since April, there have been over 100 bear attacks, resulting in a record 12 fatalities, particularly in Akita and Iwate prefectures.
Troops have begun operations in Kazuno, advising residents to avoid forests and stay indoors at night. Locals are even using bells to deter bears. Mayor Shinji Sasamoto noted, "The townspeople feel the danger every day," affecting daily life and events.
Rising bear numbers and climate changes are increasing human-bear interactions across Japan.
