Moldova election results: who won and did the diaspora play a role?

SUMMARY

Moldova's ruling pro-Europe party, the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), won a significant majority in the recent elections, defeating pro-Russian parties despite reported violence and interference from Russia. With 50.16% of the vote, PAS secured about 55 seats in parliament. The elections were viewed as crucial for Moldova's path toward EU membership amid ongoing Russian influence.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu termed the election “the most consequential” in history. Notably, about 17.5% of votes came from the Moldovan diaspora. Russian interference allegations included vote-buying and cyberattacks, as well as campaigns of disinformation. Protests erupted after opposition claims of election fraud.

PAS leaders emphasized the public's victory over Russian tactics. The president is expected to maintain Prime Minister Dorin Recean in the role.
