AI film school trains next generation of Hollywood moviemakers

Laid-off visual effects artist Michael Eng found himself lacking machine learning experience while seeking jobs in Hollywood. To address this gap, he enrolled in Curious Refuge, an online AI film academy launched in May 2023. The academy has attracted over 10,000 students, mostly industry professionals looking to adapt to AI advancements.

Despite concerns over AI taking jobs, individuals like Eng and Petra Molnar have successfully pivoted their careers. Molnar, originally a dental hygienist, utilized AI tools to land a new role in advertising. Curious Refuge now offers courses in 11 languages, focusing on AI-assisted filmmaking.

As generative AI grows, an anticipated job consolidation in Hollywood could reach 120,000 positions by year-end. Yet, experts believe this also opens new storytelling opportunities. With studios competing for AI-savvy talent, Curious Refuge is positioned as a crucial training hub for the evolving landscape.
