Illinois allows assisted suicide after Pritzker signs bill
SUMMARY
Illinois has recently passed a law allowing medically assisted dying for terminally ill residents. Gov. JB Pritzker signed the legislation, named "Deb's Law," enabling adults with a prognosis of six months or less to request a prescription for self-administered medication.
The law was approved narrowly by the Illinois Senate after earlier passage in the House. Advocates argue it provides autonomy in dying, while opponents view it as legalizing "state-sanctioned suicide."
Illinois becomes the first Midwest state to enact such a law, joining 12 other states with similar provisions.
