Germany to reject Starmer's plan for troops in Ukraine as Europe splits over peace deal

Germany is expected to reject Sir Keir Starmer's proposal for a European peacekeeping force in Ukraine. As leaders prepare for a meeting in Paris, the UK and France plan to suggest sending troops, while Germany and Poland are unlikely to participate. Other nations like Italy and Norway remain undecided.

Prime Minister Starmer expressed readiness to deploy British forces to enforce a peace deal ahead of discussions on the ongoing war. Diplomats believe Germany's absence would hinder peacekeeping efforts. Poland has also ruled out participation due to commitments to NATO, while Hungary and Slovakia lean against involvement due to ties with Russia.

A diplomatic source noted, “The whole discussion is moot without both Germany and Poland’s participation.”
