Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal identified as alleged gunman

SUMMARY

An Afghan national, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, shot two National Guard troops near the White House in what is being treated as a possible act of terrorism. He allegedly ambushed the guards around 2:15 PM, shooting one in the chest and head before hitting a second guard.

Lakanwal, who entered the U.S. during the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal, was taken down by a third guard and was seriously injured. Authorities have not disclosed a motive, but police described the incident as a "targeted shooting."

In response, President Trump ordered an additional 500 National Guard troops to Washington, DC. The FBI is investigating the situation, with some Afghan evacuees previously identified on a terrorist watchlist.
