UK and France to build new Storm Shadow missiles

SUMMARY

Britain and France are set to develop a new generation of Storm Shadow missiles following their success in Ukraine. Production will resume after a 15-year pause as Europe responds to the threat from Russia. Both nations have depleted their stockpiles after donating missiles to Ukraine for strikes against Russian targets.

The Defence Ministry described the new missile as "the next generation of deep strike, anti-ship missiles." This initiative is part of an Anglo-French “Entente Industrielle” to enhance military collaboration.

UK PM Keir Starmer said

“From war in Europe, to new nuclear risks and daily cyber-attacks – the threats we face are multiplying, as close partners and Nato allies, the UK and France have a deep history of defence collaboration and today’s agreements take our partnership to the next level."

Storm Shadow missiles have a range of about 160 miles and are designed to evade detection. The renewed production is expected to support 1,300 jobs in the UK. Neither government has confirmed the number of missiles ordered or whether new stockpiles will be sent to Ukraine.

Defence officials emphasized the importance of deep-strike missiles for NATO's European allies, stating this partnership enhances collective military strength.
