Lucy Connolly to be released
Lucy Connolly, the mother and former childminder and Tory councillor's wife, is set to be released from prison after serving over nine months for a racist tweet posted during the Southport riots last summer. Connolly's social media post was made after Axel Rudakubana murdered three young girls and attempted to murder 10 others at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on July 29, which sparked nationwide unrest.
Connolly, who was sentenced to 31 months for inciting racial hatred, pleaded guilty after making the inflammatory post on X, which she later deleted, said: "Mass deportation now, set fire to all the f****** hotels full of the b******* for all I care... if that makes me racist so be it."
Following her release, Connolly's case has drawn attention to alleged inconsistencies in the UK justice system, especially when contrasted with lighter sentences for offenders with different backgrounds. Campaigners and Connolly's family are reportedly pleased about her impending freedom.
Southport killer Axel Rudakubana was sentenced in January for a minimum of 52 years, for three counts of murder, 10 of attempted murder, one of producing the biological toxin ricin and one of possession of an Al Qaeda training manual, an offence under the Terrorism Act.
