Demolition of largest Manhattan Project-era building complete

SUMMARY

The U.S. Department of Energy has demolished the Alpha-2 building at the Y-12 National Security Complex as part of a modernization effort. This 2.5-acre site will be cleared for new facilities related to the weapons mission. OREM manager Erik Olds emphasized that this demolition "enables modernization" and will serve as a blueprint for future projects.

The National Nuclear Security Administration aims to accelerate mission plans to enhance U.S. national security. Around 70 more legacy facilities are set for demolition, with work beginning this summer. OREM and its contractor, UCOR, previously removed over 500 DOE facilities to make way for new developments at the East Tennessee Technology Park.
