Thousands flee northwest Pakistan after mosques warn of possible military action

Tens of thousands have fled the Tirah Valley in northwestern Pakistan amid warnings of an impending military operation against Islamist militants. Residents left despite harsh winter conditions after mosque announcements urged evacuation. Gul Afridi, a shopkeeper, noted, "The announcements were made in the mosque that everyone should leave, so everyone was leaving." Local officials report that families are being registered for assistance in nearby towns.

While Pakistan's Defence Minister denied plans for a military operation, a military source indicated the evacuations were intended to protect civilians from "targeted intelligence-based operations." Residents disputed claims that the cold was the main cause for their departure, emphasizing the evacuation orders as the primary reason. Many faced perilous journeys and hardships during their exodus.
