Minister paves way for nationwide facial recognition rollout
SUMMARY
A nationwide rollout of live facial recognition (LFR) cameras is underway in the UK, facilitated by Minister Sarah Jones. The Home Office will fund deployments in seven police forces, expanding on successful trials in London and Cardiff. LFR technology links cameras to suspect watchlists, allowing officers to apprehend individuals quickly. Since early 2024, LFR in London has led to 1,035 arrests. While the technology is deemed valuable, critics argue it may disproportionately affect minorities and invade privacy. Nonetheless, police emphasize safeguards, including the immediate deletion of images of innocent bystanders.
