Africa CDC likely to declare mpox public health emergency next week

Africa's public health agency plans to declare an mpox emergency soon due to alarming spread rates, particularly with a new variant, Clade Ib, emerging from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mpox, which can cause mild symptoms but may be fatal, usually spreads through close contact. Reported cases in Africa rose by 79% from 2022-2023 and by 160% from 2023-24.

Jean Kaseya, Africa CDC Director General, aims to secure support from African Union leaders for the declaration next week. This would enhance cross-border coordination and resource mobilization.

Over 13,000 suspected mpox cases in Congo have resulted in 503 deaths this year. Nearby countries like Rwanda and Uganda have started reporting cases as well.
