Poland signs contract to buy more South Korean battle tanks

SUMMARY

Poland has signed a $6.5 billion deal with Hyundai Rotem for 180 battle tanks, enhancing its defense capabilities amid rising tensions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This agreement follows a previous contract for the same number of K2 tanks in 2022, with a focus on domestic manufacturing to boost Poland's defense industry.

Poland aims to allocate 4.7% of its GDP to military spending by 2025, increasing to 5% in 2026. Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized the importance of building arms plants throughout Poland. The first tank deliveries are expected next year, with local production set for 2028-2030. The agreement also includes support vehicles and a training package.
