Judge blocks Trump ban on using Food Stamps for sugary drinks and candy

A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration's plan to prohibit SNAP participants from using benefits on sugary drinks and candy. Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled that the Agriculture Department lacked the authority to approve such state waivers. Recipients in five states contested the restrictions as unlawful and confusing, impacting health management for conditions like diabetes. Jackson stated, “what they cannot do is violate the law and their own regulations along the way.” This decision is seen as a significant victory for low-income families reliant on SNAP. The Agriculture Department has not yet responded to the ruling.
