India to reopen embassy in Kabul after 4-year hiatus amid new Taliban ties
India is reopening its embassy in Kabul after a four-year closure, marking its first significant diplomatic engagement with the Taliban since they came to power in 2021. This decision comes after discussions between Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.
Jaishankar stated, “Closer cooperation between us contributes to your national development, as well as regional stability and resilience.” He reiterated India's commitment to Afghanistan's sovereignty and thanked the Taliban for inviting Indian companies to explore mining opportunities.
The announcement follows ongoing international concerns over the Taliban's restrictions on women's rights. The International Criminal Court has issued warrants against Taliban leaders for abuses related to these rights.
