Trump open to supporting armed militias in Iran

SUMMARY

President Trump is open to supporting armed Iranian militias and opposition groups willing to take up arms to dislodge the Islamic Republic, U.S. officials confirmed.

Trump spoke Sunday with Kurdish leaders operating inside Iran. The Kurds maintain a sizable armed force along the Iraq-Iran border.

The administration is also engaging other local leaders who could leverage Tehran’s current weakness to make territorial or political gains.

Israeli strikes on positions in western Iran have fueled speculation that a ground path is being cleared for possible Kurdish advances.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “President Trump has spoken with many regional partners.”

Officials said Trump has not made a final decision on providing arms, training or intelligence to these anti-regime factions.

When announcing the start of U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, Trump urged the Iranian people to rise up and “take over your government,” adding “America is backing you with overwhelming strength and devastating force.”

By considering direct support for armed resistance groups, Trump is escalating beyond public calls for popular revolt toward active proxy involvement aimed at regime change from within.

On Tuesday Trump shared a Washington Post column outlining a “Trump doctrine.” Columnist Marc Thiessen wrote, “There is no need for a U.S. invasion force. The Iranian people are the boots on the ground.”
