France, Sweden send anti-drone units to Denmark to secure EU summit

SUMMARY

France deployed 35 personnel with a Fennec helicopter and active anti-drone systems to Denmark, per Macron’s orders, to secure the Copenhagen EU summit. Sweden, responding to Denmark’s request, is sending radar-equipped anti-drone units. “The main purpose is to protect the Copenhagen area from unwelcome drone visits, drone attacks for a period of time,” Kristersson said.

Unexplained drone activity recently hit Danish airports and military sites, with NATO’s Rutte noting possible Russian involvement. Denmark, lacking ground-based missile defenses, relies on allies. Germany sent anti-drone gear and deployed the frigate Hamburg for Baltic Sentry.

The French detachment, fully operational, collaborates with Danish authorities, showcasing “European solidarity in defense against this serious threat,” per France’s Armed Forces Ministry. Sweden’s radar enhances threat detection. Kristersson emphasized the summit’s 44 attending prime ministers, highlighting Denmark’s serious risk assessment.

Violations of European airspace tie to Russia’s war in Ukraine, per Stenergard, who urged countering Russia. Kristersson noted no direct evidence links Russia to the drones but stressed vigilance. Kubilius confirmed the EU’s “drone wall” plan is now actionable to counter eastern border incursions.
