Ukraine launches massive drone strike on air bases deep inside Russia
Ukraine launched unprecedented drone strikes deep inside Russia, targeting dozens of strategic bombers at several bases, Ukrainian officials confirmed. The attack, planned for over a year, hit around 40 Russian planes, including bombers used against Ukrainian cities, with drones launched from trucks near Russian bases, some in Siberia, per a Ukrainian official.
Ukraine's SBU intelligence agency claimed it was behind the attacks on Russian planes, saying they caused $7 billion (€6.17 billion) in damage.
Controversy arose as Axios reported Ukraine "did notify" the Trump administration, but a typo meant it should read "did not notify," aligning with a U.S. official’s statement to reporters that the administration was unaware, matching official reports.
The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed attacks on five air bases, claiming some were repelled, with several aircraft catching fire but no casualties. The strike preceded Ukraine’s ceasefire talks with Russia in Istanbul on Monday, announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky, focusing on a "full and unconditional ceasefire."
