Dame Sarah Mullally enthroned as first female Archbishop of Canterbury

SUMMARY

Dame Sarah Mullally has been enthroned as the first female Archbishop of Canterbury, a historic milestone for the Church of England.

She officially began her role during a ceremony at Canterbury Cathedral attended by over 2,000 guests, including Prince William and the Prime Minister. Mullally, a former cancer nurse, is the 106th person in this position. She previously held significant roles, including chief nursing officer and bishop of London.

The event marked the start of her public ministry and her leadership of the global Anglican Communion.

Mullally aims to address deep divisions within the church, particularly regarding women’s roles and LGBTQ+ issues.

She replaces Justin Welby, who resigned amid criticism of the church's handling of abuse allegations.
