Mattel launches autistic Barbie doll carries a fidget spinner and avoids eye contact

SUMMARY

Mattel has introduced its first autistic Barbie doll designed to represent those with autism spectrum disorder. Developed over 18 months, the doll features flexible joints for stimming and avoids direct eye contact to reflect the experiences of autistic individuals.

It comes with sensory tools such as a fidget spinner, noise-canceling headphones, and a communication tablet.

Jamie Cygielman from Mattel stated, “Barbie has always strived to reflect the world kids see," emphasizing the importance of inclusion. Mattel plans to donate over 1,000 dolls to pediatric hospitals for children on the autism spectrum. This initiative aligns with their goal of increasing representation in toys.
