Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro vows to block 2 planned ICE facilities

SUMMARY

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro vowed to do whatever he can to block two warehouses from being converted into ICE facilities.

The Democratic governor is actively obstructing the Trump administration’s mass deportation operations by preventing expansion of immigration detention and processing centers in Pennsylvania.

The warehouses are located in Berks and Schuylkill Counties. The Tremont Township site in Schuylkill will serve as a detention center while the Berks County site will operate as a processing center.

Shapiro’s administration declared the projects would be “violating the rights of Pennsylvanians, increasing utility costs, harming our economy, and making the Commonwealth less safe.”

Officials said the administration “will aggressively pursue every option to prevent these facilities from opening and needlessly harming the good people of Pennsylvania.”

Shapiro met privately for more than an hour with local officials to discuss the plans.

He plans to flex his regulatory authority and legal powers to try to stop them.

This effort exposes intense blue-state resistance to federal immigration enforcement under President Trump.

Shapiro has sued the Trump administration more than a dozen times since the start of the second term.

The federal purchase of the warehouses occurred quietly earlier this month, sparking local anxiety.
