Germany's Greens push for interior ministers' meeting on banning AfD

SUMMARY

Germany's Greens are urging a special meeting of state interior ministers to discuss a possible ban on the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). This call follows the Social Democrats (SPD) passing a motion to prepare for declaring the AfD unconstitutional. Green leaders criticized Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil for not prioritizing the issue.

They emphasize the need for action to form a federal-state group aimed at initiating a ban. The AfD, described as promoting anti-immigration and nationalist rhetoric, has risen as Germany's largest opposition party. In May, the domestic intelligence agency labeled the AfD as "confirmed right-wing extremists," allowing for increased surveillance. However, some conservative leaders are cautious about the ban due to its political risks.

Earlier today, Germany's socialist SPD party unanimously decided to prepare the process for banning the AfD.
