
Taiwan debuts US-made Abrams tanks during live-fire drills
Taiwan conducted live-fire drills with its new M1A2T Abrams tanks, showcasing military strength amid rising tensions with China. The exercise aimed to boost public morale and highlight combat readiness. This demonstration coincided with the People's Liberation Army's (PLA) military activities across the Taiwan Strait, signaling escalating rivalry.
Four tanks demonstrated their firepower in Hsinchu, with President Lai Ching-te stating they provide an "extra layer of security."
Taiwan's acquisition of these tanks follows 24 years without new models.The tanks are among the first batch of 38 Abrams that were delivered in December, the balance of the 108 ordered are due to be delivered end of 2025 and in 2026.
Lai indicated plans for integrating tanks with counter-drone capabilities. Civil defense drills are also conducted to ensure public preparedness amid rising tensions with China.
Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te praised the tanks, stating, “These tanks live up to their reputation as the most powerful on earth.” The drills emphasize Taiwan’s evolving defense strategy that incorporates modern warfare tactics alongside the advanced tanks.
