Ukraine to cut off Russian gas transit on 1 January 2025, PM says
SUMMARY
Ukraine will stop transiting Russian gas starting at 7 am on January 1, 2025, announced Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. This decision follows years of preparations to reduce dependency on Russian gas, particularly since the escalation of conflict in 2022.
Shmyhal stated that future gas transit would depend on agreements to transport non-Russian gas, as requested by the European Commission. Despite halting Russian gas, Ukraine will continue to transit Russian oil when requested by the EU.
The decision aligns with Gazprom's plans, which do not include gas transit through Ukraine after the end of 2024.
