Massive fire breaks out at Pennsylvania aerospace manufacturer

SUMMARY

A significant fire erupted at SPS Technologies, an aviation and aerospace manufacturing facility in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, around 9:30 p.m. on Monday. Witnesses reported an explosion, but all employees were safely evacuated.

Due to heavy smoke and potential toxic materials, schools in the Abington and Jenkintown districts closed Tuesday. A shelter-in-place order was issued as hazardous air pollutants were a concern.

Hazmat crews are monitoring air quality, and businesses within a one-mile radius have been advised to close.

SPS Technologies has been at this site since 1920 and faced an EPA fine earlier this year for hazardous waste violations.
