India needs to invest more than $2.4 trillion for climate-resilient urban infrastructure

SUMMARY

India requires over $2.4 trillion by 2050 to develop climate-resilient urban infrastructure, according to the World Bank. The urban population is expected to nearly double, increasing vulnerability to extreme weather due to climate change. The report highlights that without investment in housing, transport, and waste management, costs from weather damage could soar.

Urban flooding already incurs $4 billion in annual losses, projected to reach $30 billion by 2070 without action. Current spending on urban infrastructure is only 0.7% of GDP, below global standards. Coordination among governments and private sector partnerships are crucial for climate-related projects.

“Timely actions can avert billions of annual damages,” the report states.
