Escaped monkeys on overturned truck used for hepatitis C, herpes and COVID testing

SUMMARY

A truck carrying Rhesus monkeys for testing overturned in Jasper County, Mississippi. The monkeys, said to be aggressive and weighing around 40 pounds, were reported to be carrying hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID.

Authorities shot the monkeys when they escaped. Initially, all but one was killed, but later reports indicated that "several" monkeys were still at large. Tulane University, which owned the monkeys, disputed claims of infectious diseases, stating they were non-infectious.

Local law enforcement and wildlife officials are coordinating the response to the incident.
