American crashes out in women's downhill at Winter Olympics

SUMMARY

American skier Lindsey Vonn underwent surgery and is now stable in hospital, after suffering a left leg fracture during the women's downhill competition in Cortina, potentially marking the end of her Olympic career.

Vonn, 41, was competing just nine days after an ACL injury. She crashed while attempting a jump, leading to her airlift to the hospital for orthopedic surgery. Team member Breezy Johnson, who bagged the gold medal, expressed heartbreak, noting the tough nature of the sport.

Vonn had made a comeback after her retirement in 2019 but now faces uncertainty about her future in competitive skiing. "It can hurt you so badly but you keep coming back for more," Johnson remarked.
