FBI to help hunt down Texas Democrat lawmakers who fled the state over redistricting

SUMMARY

Texas Democrat lawmakers fled to Illinois, halting a Republican-led congressional redistricting vote by denying quorum. Governor Abbott issued arrest warrants to compel their return. Senator Cornyn announced FBI Director Kash Patel approved federal assistance to track the absent Democrats.

“I am proud to announce that Director Kash Patel has approved my request for the F.B.I. to assist state and local law enforcement in locating runaway Texas House Democrats,” Cornyn said. The redistricting plan, endorsed by Trump, aims to create five new Republican-leaning House seats. The lawmakers, previously beyond Texas jurisdiction, now face federal pursuit.
