Switzerland halts new US arms exports over neutrality

SUMMARY

Switzerland will halt exports tied to new US arms orders, citing its tradition of neutrality amid the Iran conflict. The government stated, “Exports of war materiel to the US cannot currently be authorized.”

Since February 28, no new export licenses for war materiel to the US have been issued. Switzerland also closed airspace for US military flights related to the war unless their purpose is clear.

Last year, the US was the second-largest importer of Swiss arms, accounting for about 10% of shipments. Existing licenses can still be used, but exports will be regularly reviewed.

Lawmakers had previously proposed easing restrictions to allow exports to a select group of countries, but changes are not yet in effect as they may be challenged in a referendum.
