Australian-made rocket crashes after 14 seconds with Vegemite payload

SUMMARY

An Australian rocket carrying a jar of Vegemite crashed after 14 seconds of flight on Wednesday. Gilmour Space Technologies aimed to launch the first Australian-made rocket into orbit. CEO Adam Gilmour expressed joy when the rocket lifted off, despite its short flight.

Footage showed it hovering briefly before losing thrust. The 23-meter vehicle took off from Abbot Point with hopes of commercial launches by late 2026 or early 2027. Gilmour mentioned preparations for a second test flight within six to eight months. He noted, “I’m sorry to say the Vegemite didn’t make it.”

The company received significant government funding to support its efforts.
