Trump declares Russia 'extraordinary threat to US' as he hits India with tariffs

Donald Trump labeled Russia an “extraordinary threat” to the US amid ongoing tensions from the war in Ukraine. He announced new sanctions, including a 25% tariff on India for purchasing Russian oil, bringing the total to 50%. Trump gave Vladimir Putin until Friday to agree to a ceasefire or face further tariffs on Russia's trading partners.

Trump stated, “It is necessary and appropriate to impose an additional ad valorem duty” on Indian imports of Russian oil, aiming to cut revenues fueling Putin's war efforts. Despite a meeting between Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Putin, the proposed ceasefire was not unconditional. The US is positioning itself to support Ukraine with additional sanctions and military aid.
