Poland will eventually seek its own nuclear weapons

SUMMARY

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has openly declared that Poland will eventually seek its own nuclear weapons.

Tusk stated that Poland “takes nuclear security very seriously” and will prepare for “the most autonomous actions possible in this matter in the future.”

The remarks reflect Warsaw’s deepening doubts about the reliability of the U.S. nuclear umbrella and NATO’s extended deterrence amid ongoing Russian threats to Eastern Europe.

Poland is simultaneously accelerating civilian nuclear power plant construction to lay the groundwork for greater strategic independence.

Tusk confirmed active talks with France after President Emmanuel Macron offered temporary deployment of nuclear-capable fighter jets to allied nations. Warsaw has already signed a treaty with Paris that could allow access to French nuclear protection.

Discussions are also underway with Sweden and Denmark. The next round is scheduled for the nuclear energy summit in Paris on March 10.

Tusk’s position aligns with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, who recently declared himself a strong supporter of Poland joining a nuclear project.

As a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Poland remains legally barred from acquiring atomic weapons. Yet Tusk’s comments mark the clearest signal yet from a major European NATO member that it intends to pursue an independent nuclear arsenal — the first such move since the Cold War.

This shift could fundamentally alter the continent’s security balance.
