Two people die after University of Kent meningitis outbreak

Two people have died from an outbreak of invasive meningitis at the University of Kent. Eleven others from the Canterbury area are hospitalized and reported to be seriously ill, most aged 18 to 21. Both deceased are believed to be between 18 and 21, with one confirmed as a student.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is notifying over 30,000 students and staff. Antibiotics are being arranged for some students, but the specific strain is not yet identified. The outbreak is thought to be linked to a social event attended by those affected.

Symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, and potential sepsis. Students are advised to be vigilant as symptoms may be mistaken for less serious conditions.
