EU adds Iran's Revolutionary Guards to terrorist list
SUMMARY
The European Union has designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization in response to its violent suppression of protests and armed riots. EU diplomat Kaja Kallas stated, "repression cannot go unanswered." Thousands are estimated to have been killed by the IRGC amid recent unrest.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot called the crackdown "the most violent repression in Iran's modern history." The EU also imposed new sanctions on six entities and 15 people linked to Iran's response to protesters. Groups on the EU's terror list face travel bans and asset freezes.
While the IRGC is classified as a terrorist group by Australia, Canada, and the US, it has not been banned in the UK.
