First decontaminated steel from Chernobyl released for reuse

SUMMARY

Ukraine's nuclear regulator has approved the release of the first 20 tonnes of decontaminated carbon steel from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant for reuse. The material was thoroughly checked at the Free Release Facility FRM-03.

This step aims to reduce radioactive waste, enhance economic efficiency in decommissioning, and highlight the reliability of Ukraine's radiation monitoring. The steel comes from dismantled equipment, with future plans to process materials from the decommissioning of three power units. The facility has been operational since September and processes up to 10 tonnes daily.
